Holmes’ Hindsight – Week 5

Before I jump in to Week 5 around the NFL, I want to dedicate a few words to looking back at one of, if not the most, prominent figures in the history of the NFL and professional sports.

Al Davis is an irreplaceable titan in the history of football – and here’s some hindsight:

  • He was one of the first coaches to welcome African-American players onto his squad.
  • After taking over as commissioner for the AFL, he was the driving force behind merging the AFL and the NFL together.
  • He was the first owner to hire an African-American coach in the modern football era (Art Shell).
  • He was the first owner to hire a Hispanic head coach (Tom Flores).
  • He is the only owner to ever hire a woman CEO (Amy Trask).
  • He established himself as a Maverick – someone who never settled for anything just because it was society’s status-quot.

While we (Raider fans) have had our share of frustrating years, there are very few figures in all of professional sports that deserve more recognition than Al Davis. As a coach, commissioner, and owner – he has truly made the game of football what it is today.
